SUGGESTION BOX |
Lead | |
|
Have a suggestion for the board? Complaint about the board?Post it here. This can be anything, from board policy to the setup to our mods and our work. Just keep everything civil, we will try to respond to every suggestion/complaint. While our responses may not be to everyone's liking, we will lay it on the table. Please be as specific as possible. It's everyone's board, and by no means is the staff trying to take it from you. If peope complain elsewhere on the board, but do not post in this thread with suggestions, then how can we really make things better?

Here's my suggestion. A while ago, both Pinpal Jude and Phaoraoh X posted separate threads that were meant to be funny. But because they had politics in the theme they were locked. I didn't see the harm in either. It's not like the thread was titled "John Walker should get the chair" or something. Just because something touches lightly on politics in humorous tone, it shouldn't be INSTANTLY locked. If that was the case everywher, the Government would cancel Jay Leno and arrest all political cartoonists in newspapers. I really don't see the harm in making light of George W.'s pretzel eating or a fictious WOS loving soldier.
Let's have more of this.... and less of this....

Re: re | ||

Zen, my 2 cents (hope this is permitted, or can only mods respond to suggestions ?)
The problem is - Whats funny to some leaves other people doing that shady pissed off stare... for instance, I didn't find the pretzel jokes funny at all... So how do the mods determine that and keep an even balance ? It's pretty hard to forsee the reaction of all the members. To safeguard against this they've instituted a policy that helps prevent these reactions by eliminating the two topics for which these situations usually develop from... politics and relgion... I think alot of people have a hard time accepting that since we're such a close knit group here ; we figure a spirited debate now and then is a good thing... The problem is, anytime a "spirited debate" that involves politics or religion comes up, 9 times out of 10 there ends up being insults thrown around and feelings hurt (the 9/11 period comes to mind). When there's a harmless joke about a politician, three replies later there's someone making an innappropriate comment (i.e. the pretzel thread and the "stupidity" undertones that ran throughout it) IMO it's really just a matter of accepting that there are an infinite number of other sites on the net for discussion of these topics - the focus around here is Simpsons collectibles, and Moe's is a bonus area where we can gab... But there have to be limits set... There are reasons this place remains so peaceful and friendly, IMO those rules are one of those reasons. As far as limiting the rest of the banned topics, this is a children friendly site, thus the need to no curse, or discuss sex or drugs. And the rest of the stuff they ban discussion about (mp3 talk, mod chips etc) is just plain illegal, no real grey area there. Phew... There's my thoughts on the subject... |

Okee doke.
A) Politics discussions would no doubt be debated and cause divisions and petty arguments between boardies. Think I'm wrong? Remember XBox vs Gamecube vs PS2? Take that, multiply the number of people involved, and and double the posters' enthusiasm. Politics, while a non-issue to some, mean a lot to some people who are strongly opinionated. We as a staff have decided that this board should not be a place to express or encourage certain viewpoints about hot topics, including but not limited to: -Democrat vs. Republican -War vs. Pacifism -Violence (example: killing celebrity threads) -Sex -Drug Usage -Religion -Terrorism Everyone who agrees or disagrees with this can post in response to A. B) Your second, and probably more pressing point: People spend a lot of time working on threads not intending to hurt anyone, just to be funny. The topic about the guy attacking Taliban soldiers with toys was funny, indeed...but it did humorize a war, which is by nature political. The staff agreed it should be closed. However, it must have been like a slap to PPJude and angered him. We have decided to make sure and email the posters in these cases with an explanation. Everyone who agrees or disagrees with this can post in response to B. |

My suggestion would be to sticky up this thread so everyone can find it again.
But, I don't know how to play Legos!

Zen411's post is a good reason why in general I advocate dealing with these sorts of concerns privately. ... anywho, the debate over what was acceptable political reference could easily become a debate on what was acceptable politics and there you go, you've gone into the red.
Also for the record, PharoahXs post was removed due to the large amount of sexual references as much as the political mentions within. |

Re: re | ||

A suggestion I gave a while ago is to have a section where members can voluntarily post their eBay handle so that folks can try to avoid outbidding fellow members when possible. People have complained that I outbid them, but when your board handle is completely different than your eBay handle, what, am I Karnac or something? At least my handles are nearly the same so people would know it's me. And of course when it comes to a rare or heavily sought after item, all bets are off

"I really don't see the harm in ..."
BLAM - thread turns into a discussion of what's acceptable politics or not if it's left to run and was a real thread that had political stuff in it. I see the harm in making political jokes. Humor is one of the most subversive things out there, the Simpsons being a good example of that (at least a few years ago). Again, there are other places on the net to go and joke about politics... |

I didn't get to see Phaoraoh's post, but judging from past ones they always seem meant to be funny. I thought the one about pretzel eating would have been funny. I am not trying to push for laxing of the rules or more talk of politics.... just more consideration for attempts at humor. Okay, I'll stop talking about it.......
now. |

Re: re | ||

Humor is good, and the staff does recognize when someone is just being funny. When we lock these threads we in no way are denying the thread's humor, or punishing a member. We don't want to make the member feel like they were totally in the wrong or anything, which is why we should email them.
Humor is encouraged, just not when derived from politics. The pretzel thing didn't bother me at all, the president's politics weren't even mentioned...it was just funny. GuinnessGulper, why don't you start up that thread in Toy Sightings. That's where a lot of the eBay sightings seem to go. |

My personal opinion on the subject is that we have a bunch of whiny, spoiled little brats in this place. No, I'm not speaking to anyone specifically, so don't start the "Waa, waa, he talked about me" crap. Those kinds of posts piss me off beyond belief.
This is a Simpsons board. If you guys don't like the limited amount of non-Simpsons stuff you can talk about here, then why don't we just get rid of the Moe's forum? That idea has been brought up in discussions amongst the staff, and it would solve everyone's constant bitching about off-topic crap. You people (again, not directed to anyone in particular) have no f'ing idea how dis-heartening it is to put in 5 or 6 hours a day doing what I (as well as everyone else on staff) think is good for this board, only to have someone start crying because he couldn't say the word Taliban. Well I say "hard cheese!" How hard is it to understand that it doesn't belong here. Go to yahoo.com, and type in "politics message board" and I guarantee you will find a place to post all your witty jokes or whatever about the current state of affairs in the world. It doesn't belong here, and that's that. The fact remains that this board would not be here if it weren't for the staff. So I would say that this entitles them to somewhat of a say, as to what they want to spend their time moderating. If I have to sit here and sort out who's starting what kinds of discussions that I don't want to hear about on a Simpsons board, then what the hell am I even doing here in the first place? I am strongly in favor of completely removing the Moe's forum, so I don't have to constantly remind myself why I put up with this kind of crap. If we remove Moe's, then we will be an all Simpsons board, and that is where my vote goes. |

Re: re | ||

Well, if I had a vote (and since I'm not a mod I don't) I'd vote to keep Moe's.
All we've heard recently are about the problems with this board. About locking threads or whining and complaining about threads. How about the good parts of Moe's? I like hearing from other members when they talk about favorite TV shows, movies, music, etc... I learn more about them, and they me. I also from time to time find out info about something that interests me that if it wasn't for these posts, I wouldn't have known. I don't spend 24/7 on the interenet, I don't hang out in multitude Boards or spend hours instant messaging. I have too many other things to do in my life (as I'm sure many of you have as well) and I like to center my hours on the net in one or two destinations. Remember, The Simpsons are the reason we've all met here, but that doesn't mean we can't share interests in other things as well. I'm currently trying to set up a get together in my area with area board members. A chance to meet and hang out with other Simpson fans and collectors. This site, and Moe's will hopefully help set this up. And if it wasn't for Moe's, we'd have had no Board Fantasy Football League, which was fun. And remember, there's an easy way to deal with multiple whiners and complainers,...ignore them. They'll get frustrated and go away. "Just don't look, just don't look! Well, that's my two-cents. |

Re: re | ||

I think this thread is a great idea. We aren't as thin-skinned as a lot of people seem to think we are, but the more that this kind of stuff spills over into unrelated threads and forums (which happens all the time), the more we have to jump in and look like bad guys to some of you. This thread is the perfect place for suggestions. As long as you keep it clean and show us the same respect we show for you, we can take it. Suggest away!

Re: re | ||

On another topic, something has to be done to discourage pointless threads. There are just too many "I like pie.", "this team sucks", "Apples smell funny" posts around here. I know it's a delicate line, but I think we could pretty clearly state that if a new topic is started, it should either be informational (i.e. "for those of you that like ______, I just heard that _____") or at least open-ended enough to provoke discussion.
I know the rebuttal to that is "well just don't read it if you think it's pointless" or "just ignore them and they'll stop", but the point is everytime you start some idiotic thread that doesn't make any sense and contains enough grammatical errors to make an English teacher's head explode, a thread that other people found enjoyable and that actually contributed to our community gets pushed down the page a little bit more. there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots. |

Re: re | ||

See, I disagree there youdictategood. I enjoy some of the pointless threads, and some that you mentioned aren't even pointless. Even if an informational/enjoyable thread is pushed down the page, does it take that much effort to bump it up? The one thing I do agree with you on is the grammatical errors, though.
Let's see if I remember how to make my mark...coolcatmissy

That's why this is in the "Suggestions Box" thread, Cletus. JMurray ASKED for our thoughts. So, politely, don't go bashing those who did what he asked for.
