I don't like the new star power meter (it's a few tubes instead of the bar). It gets hard to see how much is left when it's low. I do like that the fret board doesn't jump when you activate star power, which could screw you up before if you were on a particularly difficult section. The notes just change to that blue color and the usual sound effects/louder music.
The controls so far seem smooth (hammer-ons and pull-offs work well) and the overall feel of the game hasn't changed. The battles with famous musicians (Tom Morello, Slash) are OK but not that great. You play an original composition against them, and try to make them lose. The way you do this is that, in this mode, instead of star power you get these new "attacks". You use the attacks and it messes with the other player (shakes their fretboard, doubles their notes, increases their difficulty, etc.) The battles are just OK but after you win, then that artist plays with you on one of their songs. I think it unlocks the character at that point as well (so that you can play as Tom Morello and Slash).
Overall it is a very solid game, faithful to the last three. I have only played for about an hour, so once I get further into it I'll come back and post more. I was looking forward to trying out the Dragonforce song but I don't see it in the Store. Did it get left out of the PS2 version, or do I have to unlock something (like beating expert levels) to be able to buy it? Anyone heard?
