Going to college soon! |

Next Wednesday I'll be leaving home for my freshman year at Caltech (yes, Scott, I'm a nerd). I'm pretty excited (I think), but I don't think
the fact that I'm leaving has really hit me yet, and I don't expect it to for another month or so.

It's (sadly) been quite a few years since college, so lemme see if I can remember some tips... there is, of course, the usual reminder to wear flip-flops
when showering (shared dorm showers = gross!). I'd also buy a small mini-fridge for your room. Most floor kitchens have a shared fridge, which leads to
stolen food. Try (as best one can) to make friends with your dorm-mates and the other people on your floor. That way, when you have to yell at them, they may
actually listen. Finally, the best way to avoid the Freshmen 15 is to not eat out every night like some college kids seem to do.

Pack only what you know you'll use. The dorm room is never as big as you expect. Also, talk to your roommate early so you don't end up bringing
duplicates of things like TVs.

I think I have one piece of advice for you that will get you through all the tough times...

Red, he's only 18! Don't encourage underage drinking!
This isn't college related, but Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena has some decent shopping and eateries, much like San Diego's Gaslamp district. It's not as vast, though. Ham Salad, Moderator, Simpsons Collector Sector

I seem to recall the freshman 15 being because of the beer not cause of eating out all that time. Pretty much everyone I knew had no money or very little of it
so eating out wasn't really an option.
The only thing I can really say is GO TO CLASS. Don't pull a me and cost yourself an extra year because you were retarded your first semester. |

My advice from my first go 'round of college is to find a good balance between school work (go to class and do your homework) and socializing.

Awwww....our little Sloppy is growing up.
Having attended one of our country's fine military academies, where you are pretty much "directed" to attend class and where they issue you what clothing and supplies you need when you get there, I am not sure any advice I have (like: wrap an old t-shirt around your floor mop to spread the wax around evenly, or newspaper is good for cleaning your mirrors with out getting streaks, or once you have made your bed with perfect folds and corners, don't sleep under the covers, just get another blanket and sleep on top of it so you don't have to take the time to make the bed again) will really help you out. I will tell you though that you should never agree to share a place with two other people. 3 is never a good number for roommates. It always, with out fail, ends up that at any given time, there will be 2 of the roommates that get along better leaving the 3rd person an outcast. And the alliances are ever shifting, so it can be a very frustrating environment. Good Luck, Study Hard and Party Harder!

Thanks for the advice everyone! We just shipped out most of my clothes and misc. supplies today, so the bulk of my packing is done.
Alex - Nobody actually knows who their roomate is yet. It's a complicated system, and I think we actually end up picking ourselves a couple weeks in. Kraeman - I'll be sure never to exceed bandwidth. One week to go. Wow. Update: I'm in L.A. now. I arrive at campus on Sunday.

Ketriana wrote: Oh yeah, forgot to follow through with this. Caltech is great. I don't think there's any other school that would be as perfect as a fit for me. The work is insanely difficult (thank god the first two terms are entirely pass/fail), but I'm still having a great time. And I met Bill Nye. I'm from Denver.
